Subtraction. One of the most recent lessons I’ve learned is that subtraction often gives way to addition. While we often see subtraction as a negative (and scary!), the reality is that subtraction is necessary to make room for something else.
One of the most recent lessons I’ve learned is that subtraction often gives way to addition.
Unlike in the past when I’ve been caught in the “in between” wondering which direction to take, one thing was abundantly clear to me as I held my blank journal and pen in my hand in January: I would say “yes” to whatever came.
So, when I got the call offering me the job I currently hold, I did not hesitate.
The answer was “Yes.”
Now, subtraction is never easy. Leaving a life I’d known for 31 years was sad and scary. I left behind a church I loved, a career I enjoyed, and friendships that carried me through the highs and lows of life.
But, here’s what I know now.
My subtraction from the life I had made room for other people to step up and step into their callings. The things that were once mine to do now belong to someone else, and where my journey ended, someone else will step in and carry the work forward with greater passion, vision and creativity than I ever dreamed.
In the past, I’ve held on to things for too long.
In the past, I’ve held on to things for too long.
Overstaying.
Overthinking.
And, trying to work it all out in my mind before I moved on.
But not this time.
I didn’t know what 2022 would hold, but I knew my “Yes” was on the table.
So, what did the subtraction of 31 years of familiarity make room for?
A lot.
We’ve spent time with family almost every weekend since we moved here.
We found a church home we love that has presented us with new opportunities for ministry (plus, we are enjoying riding to church together after so many years of taking separate cars!)
My new job has opened more doors than I would have ever dreamed.
And an unexpected bonus…the Tennessee Rays are moving to TEXAS!
But wait…it gets even better.
They are moving WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE of our apartment. We are beside ourselves!
Is life perfect? No.
But are we here for a purpose? Yes.

What about you?
Are you holding on when you know you need to let go?
Have fear and anxiety wrangled you into staying when you know it’s time to move on?
Are you worried about being replaced by someone who will do what you were doing better in the next season?
Whatever your fear, whatever your worry, one small but familiar verse is the prayer you need to get started…
“Trust in and rely confidently on the Lord with all your heart
And do not rely on your own insight or understanding.
In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him, And He will make your paths straight and smooth [removing obstacles that block your way].”
Proverbs 3:5-6 AMP
Even if you trust and He subtracts, you can rest in knowing that He will make the way forward and do more than you can “ask, think or even imagine” (Ephesians 3:20).
How has subtraction made room for more in your life? I would love to hear your story.
